Start With a Story – The Power of a Personal Opening; Christian Manly

The first few moments of a presentation can determine whether your audience leans in – or tunes out. One of the most effective ways to capture attention from the start is with a personal story or anecdote.

Stories create an immediate human connection. Instead of beginning with statistics, bullet points, or a predictable introduction, a personal experience gives your audience something relatable and authentic. It enables them to see the person behind the presentation and creates an emotional connection before you move into your main message.

A good opening story doesn’t need to be dramatic. It might be a lesson you learned, a mistake you made, a surprising customer interaction, or a moment that changed your perspective. What matters is that the story connects naturally to your topic and gives the audience a reason to care about what comes next.

Stories are also memorable. Long after people forget your slides or statistics, they’re likely to remember how your story made them feel – and the message attached to it.

So, instead of opening your next presentation with, “Today I’m going to talk about…” start with a story. Capture their attention, make it personal, and give them a reason to keep listening.
